Since its establishment in 2016, the WilDCats at the Capitol internship initiative at the University of Kentucky has been forging pathways for students to delve into transformative experiences in the heart of Washington, D.C. Crafted through a collaborative effort between the Office of Federal Relations, the Department of Political Science within the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Student Government Association, this program has emerged as a cornerstone of experiential learning for UK students.
Gavin Cooper, currently a junior at UK pursuing community and leadership development, has immersed himself in the WilDCats in the Capitol program during the Spring 2024 semester, interning in the office of Senator Joe Manchin (WV).
Reflecting on his experience, Cooper shared, “My favorite aspect of this program is the opportunity to engage in hands-on work at a high level. Every task undertaken here in D.C. resonates deeply with our lives in intricate ways, and this internship provides a unique chance to witness the inner workings of it all.”
At its essence, the program offers students an immersive experience in the nation’s capital throughout an entire semester. Participants cohabit, attend classes, and engage in full-time internships, all while maintaining progress toward their degrees. This unique integration of academic study and professional development empowers students to translate classroom learning into real-world contexts, equipping them for prosperous careers post-graduation.
“This program is dear to me because it has allowed me to acquire invaluable internship experience without delaying my graduation.” expressed Cooper. Over time, WilDCats at the Capitol has broadened its impact through collaborations with various university departments and offices.
Last year, the Office of Federal Relations partnered with the Office for Student Success to promote the program across all academic colleges and departments, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for students across disciplines.
Amelia Iliohan, a graduate of UK who participated in WilDCats at the Capitol in 2018, hails from a small town in Western Kentucky. She attests that this program was her sole feasible avenue to explore career opportunities in Washington. Presently, she serves as the associate director of events and member engagement at the National Association of States Departments of Agriculture (NASDA).
