Upon taking office, Mayor Cherelle Parker vowed to enact enhancements in Kensington as part of her broader commitment to fostering a safer, cleaner, greener, and more economically inclusive city for all residents.
On Saturday, a Philadelphia church commenced the journey towards fulfilling this pledge.
“We have enlisted numerous volunteers who participated in a kick-off event today, and we plan to sustain this effort in the weeks ahead,” remarked Craig Cerrito, an associate pastor at Rock Ministries of Philadelphia.
On Saturday morning, clergy members from Rock Ministries embarked on a mission to Kensington Avenue near Somerset Street, pooling their efforts to uplift the neighborhood. A ride along Kensington Avenue provides a stark view of the daily living conditions endured by the community.
“Kensington has gained international notoriety for being one of the most challenging communities in the United States, heavily impacted by the drug trade and its associated symptoms,” stated Cerrito.
Rock Ministries revealed that the City of Philadelphia had enlisted their support to address issues such as neighborhood cleanup, homeless outreach, and addiction assistance on the streets of Kensington.
“Clearly, the situation we’re facing in Kensington is extremely complex,” remarked Philadelphia Deputy Commissioner Pedro Rosario.
In the forthcoming months, they will persist in their endeavors, engaging with the community to aid the city in enhancing public safety.
“Listen, the Kensington neighborhood is facing significant challenges. We’re in a state of crisis. Our current approach involves ongoing outreach over the next several weeks to months, aiming to reach every individual in dire need,” expressed Cerrito.
Another cleanup initiative in Kensington is scheduled for next Wednesday.
