Eagle’s Fletcher Cox announces his retirement

Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, originally expected to enter free agency this week, revealed his decision to retire from professional football in a social media announcement on Sunday. This announcement comes shortly after center Jason Kelce announced his retirement less than a week ago. Cox, a first-round pick in 2012, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to wear the Eagles uniform for the past 12 seasons.

He extended his appreciation to Kelce, as well as to his other longtime teammates, members of the Eagles organization, and the team’s fans for their support throughout his career. “I dedicated everything I had to this team and this city,” Cox stated. “While I’m uncertain about what lies ahead for me, I am eternally grateful for my time here in Philadelphia and with the Eagles organization.”

Throughout his tenure, Cox started in 194 out of 200 regular season and playoff games for the Eagles. This included both of their Super Bowl appearances during his time with the team. He currently holds the third position in franchise history for games played, trailing only Brandon Graham and Kelce. Cox’s remarkable career also saw him earn first-team All-Pro honors once and second-team recognition three times. Additionally, he secured six Pro Bowl selections, solidifying his legacy as one of the finest players in Eagles history.

During the previous season, Cox tallied five sacks, as well as one forced and one recovered fumble, across 15 games. Notably, he also contributed a half-sack in Philadelphia’s playoff defeat against the Buccaneers, marking his final appearance in the game.

While Cox is transitioning into retirement, his teammate and fellow defensive stalwart Brandon Graham is preparing for one last season. Graham recently inked a one-year contract with the Eagles, intending it to be his farewell season.
