Usher, Fantasia Barrino, ‘Color Purple’ Honored at 55th NAACP Image Awards

Usher was honored with the title of Entertainer of the Year at the 55th annual NAACP Awards on Saturday night, recognizing the accomplishments of entertainers and writers of color.

After receiving the award at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, the celebrated R&B artist expressed gratitude for his career journey spanning three decades.

During his acceptance speech, Usher highlighted recent milestones such as his sold-out residency in Las Vegas, marriage, the release of his ninth studio album “Coming Home,” and his historic Super Bowl halftime performance, which set a record for the highest viewership in the game’s history.

Usher triumphed over contenders including Colman Domingo, Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey, and Keke Palmer. Expressing his astonishment, the multi-Grammy winner remarked on the magnitude of his achievements.

He acknowledged and thanked those who have supported him throughout his illustrious career, dedicating the accolade to his loyal fans whom he affectionately referred to as his “number ones.”

Concluding his speech with lyrics from his hit song “Superstar” from the album “Confessions,” Usher shared his appreciation for the love and support of his fans. Earlier in the ceremony, Usher received the President’s Award for his outstanding public service contributions through his New Look Foundation. He expressed gratitude to the influential women in his life, including his mother and wife, Jenn Goicoechea.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Queen Latifah, aired live on BET. “The Color Purple” was honored with the award for Best Motion Picture, boasting a star-studded cast including Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Domingo, H.E.R., Danielle Brooks, Corey Hawkins, and Bailey. Barrino, acclaimed for her portrayal of Celie in the film, clinched the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture.

Reflecting on her win, Barrino expressed surprise and gratitude, emphasizing the impact of her role in “The Color Purple” on audiences.
