Ed Sheeran surprised fans during his concert in Mumbai by singing in Punjabi for the first time, sparking excitement across social media platforms.
At the Saturday night show, the British pop sensation welcomed Indian singer Diljit Dosanjh to join him on stage. The audience erupted with enthusiasm as the duo delivered a Punjabi rendition of Dosanjh’s popular track “Lover.”
On Instagram, fans expressed their awe, with one stating it was “the crossover we never knew we needed.” Another remarked, “I think I have witnessed history in the making,” while a third praised Sheeran’s Punjabi pronunciation as “perfect.”
Following the electrifying performance, both artists shared a clip from the event on their respective Instagram accounts.
Ed Sheeran, known for hits like “Shape Of You,” took to social media to share his excitement about the collaboration, writing: “Got to bring out Diljit Dosanjh tonight in Mumbai and sing in Punjabi for the first time. I’ve had such an incredible time in India, more to come!”
Similarly, Dosanjh shared the video clip with the caption: “Brother singing in Panjabi for the first time.” Celebrities also joined in the excitement in the comments section, with actor Varun Dhawan expressing his enthusiasm by simply writing: “Global domination.”
At 40 years old, Dosanjh is a major star with a strong fan base in India and beyond. This collaboration isn’t his first venture into pairing up with Western stars in Punjabi; last year, he released a song called “Hass Hass” in collaboration with “Cheap Thrills” singer Sia.
Fans celebrated Dosanjh’s ability to attract big names to sing in Punjabi, with one Instagram user commenting: “First Sia, now Ed, Diljit gonna make everyone sing in Punjabi.”
“Kudos to Diljit,” commented another user. “This man has truly revolutionized the Punjabi music scene, inspiring other artists to sing in Punjabi.”
Sheeran, a global sensation with numerous chart-topping hits, recently dropped his latest album, “Autumn Variations,” in September. His performance in Mumbai was a stop on his Asia and Europe Tour.
