American Airlines has adjusted its pet policy, offering cost savings to pet owners. Under the updated policy, passengers can now bring their furry companions along with a full-size carry-on bag into the cabin. In the past, passengers traveling with pets were restricted to bringing one small item that could fit under the seat, subject to a pet fee of $150.
This change addresses previous complaints about the unfairness of the policy, as pet owners paying the fee were still limited to one additional small personal item. With the new policy, American Airlines passengers flying with pets can enjoy a more cost-effective travel experience.
Gary Leff, a travel blogger who was among the first to report on the change, shared his past experience traveling with a Yorkshire terrier. He expressed frustration, stating, “It was always frustrating that the dog counted as the carry-on even though I was paying the extra (pet) fee that was sometimes more than the ticket for me.” Leff emphasized that the new policy would deter passengers from falsely labeling their pets as service animals to avoid paying the fee.
An American Airlines spokeswoman highlighted the intention behind the change, stating, “We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American.” This policy adjustment coincides with the airline’s recent announcement of increased costs for checking bags.
The revised fee for checking a bag on an American Airlines domestic flight is now $35 for online transactions, up from the previous $30. In-person check-in at the airport incurs a fee of $40. Additionally, the cost for a second checked bag has risen to $45, whether checked online or in person, compared to the previous fee of $40.
