Donald Trump says Gov. Greg Abbott on short list of choices for vice president

During a campaign visit along the Texas-Mexico border, former President Donald Trump hinted at Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s potential candidacy for vice president in the upcoming November election. Trump, appearing on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show, praised Abbott’s robust approach to tackling illegal immigration, suggesting that Abbott could be a strong contender for the role. When asked directly by Hannity if Abbott was under consideration, Trump affirmed his admiration for Abbott’s performance, indicating his inclusion on the shortlist of potential candidates.

Hannity’s inquiry about Abbott’s status elicited a confirmation from Trump, with Abbott standing by. However, Abbott, during a subsequent news conference in Austin, reaffirmed his dedication to serving as governor of Texas. Despite Trump’s flattering remarks, Abbott emphasized his commitment to the Lone Star State, stating unequivocally that his focus remains on Texas and his intention to seek reelection in the future.

On Thursday in Eagle Pass, Governor Abbott guided Trump on a tour of Shelby Park, which the state assumed control of in January. The park’s perimeter was fenced off, and razor wire and other barriers were installed along the nearby Rio Grande.

During Thursday’s episode of his show, Hannity dedicated the entire hour to an interview with Trump, conducted from Shelby Park. Abbott made an appearance in the final segment, where Hannity brought up the topic of potential running mates, asking if Abbott was being considered.

“I’ve been hearing more and more about that from my friends. After this show, I think I’ll be hearing it even more,” Trump responded. “He’s an exceptional man, and I was deeply honored to receive his endorsement.”

Abbott publicly endorsed Trump in November, during the former president’s visit to Edinburg for a Thanksgiving meal with state troopers and National Guard troops stationed along the border.
