Head shots, knockdowns to the floor, punches, and counter-punches – the intensity in Memphis on Sunday night echoed that of a heavyweight boxing match. However, it was all part of the exhilarating showdown between the No. 1 Houston Cougars and the No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies in the second round of the South Region in March Madness.
Fresh off a commanding 40-point victory over the No. 16 Longwood Lancers, the Cougars engaged in a physical battle under the basket and showcased their trademark stifling defense to control much of the game against the Aggies.
However, the Aggies staged a spirited comeback in the closing minutes of regulation, going on a 13-3 scoring run, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Andersson Garcia, tying the game at 86-86 and pushing it into overtime.
Houston’s star players stepped up when it mattered most, with Emanuel Sharp leading the charge with a career-high 30 points, including seven three-pointers. Jamal Shead and L.J. Cryer also made significant contributions with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
Yet, the foul situation presented a challenge as Cryer and Ja’Vier Francis fouled out before overtime, followed by Sharp and Shead during the extra period.
Despite the obstacles, the Cougars secured their fifth consecutive trip to the Sweet Sixteen. Their next challenge awaits against the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils on Friday night in Dallas, with tip-off scheduled for 8:39 p.m. CT.
The clash on Sunday marked the second encounter of the season between these two teams. Previously, the Cougars emerged victorious with a 70-66 win over the Aggies at the Toyota Center on December 16, 2023.
