Detroit Pistons center Isaiah Stewart was reportedly arrested on Wednesday for an assault incident involving Phoenix Suns center Drew Eubanks, which occurred at the arena prior to their scheduled game. Phoenix police stated that Stewart was cited and later released. Notably, Stewart was already ruled out of the game due to a sprained left ankle. Despite Stewart’s absence, Eubanks contributed significantly with six points and eight rebounds during the Suns’ 116-100 victory.
According to Eubanks, a verbal dispute ensued, leading to a physical altercation where Stewart threw a punch after they stood chest-to-chest. Security intervened, and although Eubanks claimed to be okay to play, police reported that he suffered a minor injury.
In response to the incident, the Suns released a statement condemning the unprovoked attack on Eubanks, emphasizing that such acts of violence are intolerable. They expressed full support for Eubanks and pledged to collaborate with law enforcement and the NBA on the matter.
The Pistons acknowledged being informed about the incident. “We are currently in the process of gathering information regarding the incident and its underlying causes, and we are cooperating with both the NBA and local authorities,” the team stated.
Pistons coach Monty Williams, who was let go by the Phoenix Suns after the previous season, expressed his view that the Suns’ statement might have been premature.
“In situations like these, it’s crucial to gather all relevant information. The NBA will conduct its investigation,” Williams commented following the Suns’ 116-100 victory over the Pistons. “Making a statement at this point would be irresponsible. While the Suns have labeled it as unprovoked, I believe that’s premature. We simply don’t have all the facts.
“This incident was regrettable. It’s important to allow time for a thorough investigation before making any definitive statements.”
